What is career counselling?
A largely verbal process in which a professional counsellor and counselee(s) are in a dynamic and collaborative relationship, focused on identifying and acting on the counselees’ goals, in which the counsellor employs a repertoire of diverse techniques or processes, to help bring about self-understanding, understanding of the career concerns involved and behavioural options available, as well as informed decision making in the counselee, who has the responsibility for their own actions (Herr, Cramer, & Niles, 2004, p. 42).
That’s a lot!
What is my approach to career counselling?
I will work collaboratively with you, providing support and honesty using a respectful person-centred approach. I will help you to develop a plan for personal and professional growth, and work through any career issues or problems and discover solutions.
My aim as a career counsellor is to help you to recognise their strengths, discover what is preventing you from using your resources and clarify what kind of life you want to live. I will invite you to look honestly at your career and make certain decisions about how you want to modify the quality of career.
How many career counselling sessions do I need?
Clients may present with a range of diverse needs, and career counselling tools and techniques need to be adapted to the individual.
The first career counselling session is usually an opportunity for you to tell your career story, and talk about what you hope to achieve through career counselling. The counsellor can then work with you to develop a plan of action. You may like to work through the plan with your career counsellor over several sessions. So, at a minimum you would likely require two sessions, but most people engage in more that that depending on their individual plans and preferences.
